Loud music in the church

Why do black churches play the music so loud? Is this a club? Do we need to feel the music to justify faith to God?
Several churches play music so loud in the church that you would think you were in club. If people were not so forgiving, many of us would be annoyed by the loudness and distortion of the music.

There are several options that you as a church visitor may have when visiting a church with loud music.

You may hear the humping music outside the church and not go inside. So the church may have definitely lost a potential church member.

Let’s take a look at another option. You as the visitor go inside the church thinking that you can deal with the loud music. You know; you go inside to see what is going on inside. Maybe they will adjust the sound level and eliminate the distortion. Maybe this is the only song that they may play this loud. Then reality sits in; you were naïve into thinking that they may adjust the music to the proper sound level. This is the proper sound level for this church. So you can take or leave it. So, in a calm, non-interrupting way, you leave while saying goodbye to the usher. You say you will be back, but you know you will not.

Now, let‘s look at a nicer, more respectful option. Go inside and stay until church services are over. You do not want to say anything as a visitor and you may have to shake the pastor’s hand at the door knowing that you are not coming back. You try to make the conversation with the pastor very short. Possibly, you may give the usher a false mailing address, phone number, or email address on the visitor’s card.

The last option: you may go inside, like the music and the sermon. Everyone seems to enjoy your company. Well, at least a good portion of the members appreciated your visit and wish you back. You return again and again. Next thing you know, you are one of the members who are greeting new visitors.

So much for the loud, church music.
